A so-called emergency condition means that the vaccine can be used before formal approval from the authorities. And according to a press release from Moderna, whose vaccine has reached high-efficiency figures, the company will do so on Monday next week.
According to the Boston Globe, applications will be sent to both US regulators and the EU equivalent.
“The positive primary analysis confirms the ability of our vaccine to prevent Covid-19 by 94.1 percent and, more importantly, the ability to prevent severe Covid-19,” said Stephane Bancel, CEO of Modern
This means that Moderna’s vaccine is the second that can be used before Christmas. If Moderna passes its application, older people can get vaccinated from December 21.
They get the vaccine first in Sweden
1. People over 70 years old
2. People with underlying diseases and conditions that increase the risk of becoming seriously ill if infected. These are:
• Organ transplant
• Blood cancer diseases, existing and past
• Neurological diseases that have caused a deterioration in respiratory function.
• Obesity (higher risk with higher degree of obesity)
• Diabetes (less risk if treated well)
• Current cancer treatment
• Chronic lung disease
• Stroke / demens
• Other immunosuppressive diseases or treatments
• Liver disease
• Renal insufficiency
• Cardiovascular disease
3. Health and medical assistance personnel.
Only when these three groups have received the vaccine will the rest of the population begin to be vaccinated.
Pfizer has also previously applied for an emergency permit.
“Change the course of the pandemic”
If Moderna is approved to distribute its vaccine, priority will be given to people in risk groups, healthcare professionals and the elderly.
According to the FDA, Food and Drug Administration, up to twenty million Americans can get vaccinated before the end of the year. The corresponding figure for the UK is five million.
“We believe that our vaccine will provide powerful new tools that can change the course of that pandemic and help prevent serious illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths,” said Stephane Bancel.
Known side effects of the vaccine are nausea, headache, and fever, common symptoms when the vaccine is given.
