Sweden expects a vaccine approved only in January. But small volumes may arrive before Christmas.

Vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström says the most important thing right now is that the regions are prepared.

– Because now it’s happening, now it’s serious.

Now the vaccine is near. And you can see the light in the tunnel, says Sweden’s vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström.

The Pfizer study report is fully completed and reviewed by regulatory authorities.

– The summary of the results will be published any day. It’s very exciting.

Is it still only in January that we get the vaccine?

– According to planning, it is immediately after the thirteenth weekend that we can be up and running.

But we may get approval as early as December, says Richard Bergström.

– We could get a vaccine just before Christmas, and it’s a good Christmas present for people.

How many doses are we talking about then?

– We are talking about a small volume, between 10,000 and 40,000 doses in Sweden. I mean, we shouldn’t sit around and wait until January to vaccinate, but start immediately when we get the vaccine here.

If you become one of those who would have time to get vaccinated before Christmas, you still don’t have time to get full protection because you need two doses, at intervals of a couple of weeks, explains Bergström.

– The most important thing for me now is that the regions are prepared: because now it happens, now it is serious. It’s about planning and organizing, it’s challenging.

Are you worried that the regions are not ready?

– We are used to vaccinating but this is different. For example, we do not want people to gather in large crowds at a health center or the like. It is also the first time that there are several different vaccines that are recommended for different groups. One vaccine is for one person and another for another, this is completely new.

In practical terms, how will the vaccine get to Sweden?

– With trucks. We won’t fly, it’s just as fast to drive up the hill. The vaccine is manufactured in Europe and will be processed in large barrels that go to a factory. There, the vaccine will be placed in vials and then trucked to Sweden.
