A fatal blow can strike all chili lovers in Europe.

The popular sriracha will soon disappear from store shelves.

– I do my best not to let it happen. To save the chili sauce, says import manager Daisy Ma of CT Food.

Sriracha has become a popular accessory on Swedish dining tables. The product has been sold on the Swedish market since the mid-1980s, but only in the last few decades has it had its true breakthrough.

But now that may be over. An EU directive states that the product contains the unauthorized preservative E 222. The environmental administration of the city of Malmö, where the country’s only importing company of sriracha sauce of the Huy Fong Foods inc brand is located, has banned the company will resell the product as of December 1. , about which Kvällposten was the first to write.

CT Foods appealed the decision and, while waiting for the ruling to be final, the product can continue to be sold.

– As we have appealed, that date no longer applies. We can keep selling the product until the county board makes a decision on it, says Daisy Ma, general manager of CT Foods.

All the grocery stores that have purchased the sauce can also sell their stock, even if the decision was approved in December. CT Foods also has an entry order that they hope to distribute before the ruling goes into effect.

The additive that is opposed by EU regulations, E 222, is already used in products such as wine and mashed potatoes to extend shelf life and prevent gas formation. But the function and extent of the substance must be tested for each individual product, and it has not been done with sriracha.

– There are definitely products on the market that are more dangerous to consume. If you like strong sauce, eat it at your own risk. It never gets to the point that it would be harmful, says Daisy Ma.

Daisy Ma says that in addition to her business interests in the product, she also has personal motives.

– I was born and raised with this product. It feels like a great personal loss if it were banned, says Daisy Ma.

She says that she will fight for all chili lovers so that salsa can live in Swedish food culture.

– I really fight and do my best not to ban it. To save the chili sauce, says Daisy Ma.
