People in the capital, Seoul, wear protective masks against the coronavirus, which is on the rise again in South Korea.
South Korea reported the highest daily number of people infected with the coronavirus the other day.
Now come new restrictions to stop the spread.
Restrictions are tightening for crowds and activities where the virus appears to be spreading, especially in and around the capital Seoul.
– New Years parties hosted by hotels, banquets, guesthouses and other accommodation facilities are completely banned, says Prime Minister Chung Sye-Kyun.
Public saunas and steam baths with high risk of mass spread are also suspended, as well as wind and singing instrument lessons, he says.
Starting Tuesday, the rules will also be toughened to keep distance from others, says the prime minister.
The country was initially successful in fighting the virus. However, the infection has returned, first in August and now once again.
On Sunday, 450 new cases of infection were reported after more than 500 were recorded per day in the previous three days, announces the country’s infection control authority.
Authorities see the recent surge as a third wave, fueled by eruptions at military installations, a sauna, a high school and churches.
At the same time, the government and parliament are discussing a new economic crisis compensation for households and businesses.
