Stockholm is one of the hardest hit capitals in Europe when it comes to deaths in covid-19.

Only the Spanish capital Madrid is worse in the Aftonbladet review.

– It’s terrible, says Johan Styrud, president of the Stockholm Medical Association.

With the help of three different capital mortality compilations, Aftonbladet has compiled a list of seven European metropolises. The seven are Berlin, London, Madrid, Oslo, Paris, Rome, and Stockholm.

• The list is headed by Madrid, where so far 11,349 people have died in covid-19 during the corona pandemic, which means 170 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

• In second place is Stockholm with 113 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, or a total of 2,688 deaths.

• Last on the list is Oslo, with only 63 dead, which corresponds to 9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

– It’s terrible that Stockholm is so high. Sadly, it is above all the older people in Stockholm who have been most affected by this. It is a tragedy that we will really have to investigate, why it happened like this. I’m really sorry about this, says Johan Styrud, Danderyd Hospital’s chief physician.

What is the reason for this?

– There are many aspects. It wasn’t tough enough with restrictions at once, against everyone who came home from the Alps. Then they did not keep track of the turnover of staff and family members who visited all of our nursing homes. But there are many reasons why it happened this way, and it is very tragic.

Stockholm has twelve times more deaths than Oslo, calculated per inhabitant. Why?

– Oslo was very militant at first, very powerful. They closed the community and he was not allowed to change towns for quite some time. Furthermore, they closed the border quite harshly against Sweden this spring. This may be the result of being so powerful in their actions, says Johan Styrud.

Jan Albert, professor of infection control at Karolinska Institutet, says:

– It is not calculated in exactly the same way in all countries, so the figures are a bit difficult to compare. But the numbers are probably somewhat correct. We also know that Stockholm is the part of Sweden that has had the highest spread of infection, other Swedish cities have had significantly less spread of infection.

What do the figures say about the Swedish effort against coronavirus?

– We have had many cases. A crown commission is now looking at the background to this, what could have been done differently and what can be learned for the future, says Albert.
