British actor David Prowse was best known for his role as Darth Vader in the films “Star Wars”, “Space Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi.” However, he was never seen because his face was covered by Vader’s mask, nor was his voice heard because his voice was doubled.
Prowse’s British accent was not in keeping with director George Lucas’s idea of a malicious Hollywood villain and Father’s voice was done by actor James Earl Jones.
Death is confirmed by actor Thomas Bowington’s agent who writes on Twitter: “May the force be with him, always”, referring to the classic line from the “Star Wars” movies.
George Lucas saw Prowse in the role of bodyguard in the 1971 classic “Clockwork orange” and was offered an audition for the roles of Darth Vader and Chewbacca. Prowse chose the role of Vader with the motivation: “You always remember the villains,” writes the BBC.
Before donning the Darth Vader suit, Prowse had become known in the UK as the Green Cross Man, a figure who trained children in road safety. It was also the role he was most proud of himself.
He was also a bodybuilder and friends with other powerful guys like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno (who played the Hulk) long before they got famous.
Prowse made his film debut in 1967 in the Bond parody “Casino royale James Bond 007”, where he played the Frankenstein monster.
David Prowse died after a brief illness, at the age of 85.
