Many people in Skåne saw a mysterious light phenomenon just before 7pm on Saturday. It was a fireball, that is, a space stone that burns when it enters the atmosphere.
The space rock was captured on film in Norway by Norwegian Meteor Network.
Jesper Tordsson saw the light phenomenon at 7pm when he was standing in his parking lot in Lund. First he thought it was some kind of starfall, but then he thought it could be a crashed satellite or plane.
– It was moving like a fast plane. Maybe it took three to five seconds to go down. And it exploded like an explosion when it hit the ground, he says.
However, he did not hear any sounds and the judges relied on a rough assumption that the impact took place somewhere north of Lund.
According to another witness in Malmö, the light phenomenon appeared as a flashing green light, which then exploded into yellow and orange.
The phenomenon of light It is one bolide, that is, a space stone that burns when it enters the atmosphere. It was seen in much of western Sweden and in Norway.
– There are photographs from Norway that clearly show that it is a car, says researcher Eric Stempels from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University.
– It brakes strongly when they enter the atmosphere and stops shining when there is no material left, or the stone has slowed so much that the friction is not great enough to make it shine.
– We also have a video from Trondheim showing that it is very low above the horizon. According to preliminary calculations, it appears to have passed over the sea off the west coast of Sweden, says camera director Steinar Midtskogen.
Usually the stone is burned before falling to the ground or into the sea like a meteorite.
No later than November 7, a car was observed across much of Sweden.
– Light phenomena like this happen about ten times a year in Sweden, says Eric Stempels.
