Actor Magnus Kviske, 46, drives covid-19 patients to relieve ambulance personnel.

A week ago, a 92-year-old woman died in her back seat.

– It is unworthy, he says.

Magnus wanted to make an effort during the corona pandemic. He no longer gets a job as an actor, but he has a taxi license. When Nettotaxi was looking for a taxi driver to transport covid-19 patients under the auspices of Kalmar Länstrafik, he did not hesitate.

– It is difficult to find drivers who want to do this job, we are a bit vulnerable. We rush forward and pick up patients who are very sick. I do it because I want to relieve, I know that medical care is under pressure, says Magnus.

He is not a doctor. Before starting to drive, he received basic training in CPR, how to clean the vehicle between each new patient, and how to handle the protective clothing that he must wear.

The demarcation between who should drive and who should be driven by ambulance personnel is unclear. It usually leads to older people with mild symptoms that, for example, should be sampled. But several times before, he has conducted borderline cases where he was uncomfortable. And on Friday, November 20, a completely wrong prioritization was done.

“A minute from the ER he was completely silent”

When she arrived at a nursing home in Kalmar County, it turned out that the woman who was going to drive was in a wheelchair and barely conscious. Magnus stated that it would be better with ambulance transport the ten miles to Västervik hospital.

– But the nurse had decided it would be an ambulance. I thought it probably wouldn’t end well, but I also realized that if I had to wait for an ambulance, it would take even longer, says Magnus.

Sometimes it is not clear who should receive ambulance transportation and who should be picked up by ambulance.

He put her on the shuttle bus and began the hour and a half journey through the forests of Småland.

– I drove as fast as I could, but still legally. The whole time I heard her breathing terribly in the back seat where she was sitting. We entered Västervik and she was still alive. But when the ambulance was a minute away, he was completely silent and I realized that something had happened. I rushed to the emergency room, where she was treated very quickly. But it was not possible to revive her, she had died in the car, says Magnus.

– When the adrenaline subsided, it calmed down and I myself remained there in the ER, so I collapsed. It all became so obvious. I didn’t think it was a worthy ending to die in the back seat of a shuttle bus. I started thinking things like “if I had driven a little faster anyway”.

“Don’t burden me – I feel inadequate”

A few days have passed and Magnus has gained perspective on the event. He is grateful for all the support he has received from his boss and his colleagues at Nettotaxi.

“I don’t blame myself for this, but I feel inadequate when a situation arises that could have been better resolved,” he says.

After death, changes are taking place.

– This has led to the evaluations being reviewed, who will go with us and who will go by ambulance. The distances also need to be reviewed, it is not reasonable that we travel such long distances, says Magnus.

Now he hopes to have more colleagues.

– For reasons of economy, we only have one bus in the entire Kalmar County, which is very large. It took a death to understand that we may not be able to have it like this without having to expand the business. If we had a car that could travel from Västervik instead of Kalmar, we could have saved a lot of time, says Magnus Kviske.

When Aftonbladet asks Christer Holmgren, CEO of Kalmar Länstrafik, what conclusions he draws from the incident, he responds by email:

– I’m sorry about what happened, it’s sad when something like this happens. Länstrafiken carries out the transport, but not the medical evaluation of the passengers that we are ordered to pick up. It is always the care unit or the accommodation that makes this assessment.
