In the middle of the night, the older woman from Malmö called an ambulance. Despite a large-scale home care service, ambulance personnel found her in an inflated chair, with an overflowing diaper and pressure sores. “Totally unacceptable,” wrote the ambulance staff in a report to the city of Malmö.
The home care service does not know how many hours or days the woman sat on the couch with a diaper full of people and dripping. Home help had not helped her, although there was a wheelchair next to the chair.
Around 10,000 Malmö residents have received home care and therefore a legal right to help when age, illness or disability make it difficult to manage on their own.

The old woman had recently been to the hospital, but had been transferred home.
“The woman was then placed in the armchair at home in the apartment with a diaper so that she could attend to her needs in it,” says the ambulance report.
The woman told the ambulance staff that she had sought help through the security alarm multiple times that night. Home help arrived, but did not help her.
“Since the patient cannot get up, the home care staff have ignored the needs of the patient,” it says in the ambulance report.
The ambulance staff quickly decide to take the woman to the hospital. Not because he is considered to have a serious illness, but “due to a totally unsustainable family situation.
Staff who were alerted to the woman’s home to help her get out of the padded chair described the situation as totally unacceptable and wrote a report.
According to the report, the woman has been sitting for so long that she has had various red sores and pressure sores.
“The diaper is also completely full and literally drains urine. Both the patient and the chair are covered in this, ”writes the ambulance staff.

The elderly woman told the ambulance staff that the home help service works alone at night and does not want to move her from the chair because of the risk of tripping.
The nurse claims that there is a new wheelchair next to the woman’s chair, which would make it possible for even one person to move the woman from the padded chair.
“Awareness has been too low among home care staff of what happens if you let an elderly person sit in their own urine for several hours / days in an armchair,” it says in the report where the incident is described as ” totally unacceptable. “
The report has now reached the city of Malmö, which has launched an investigation.

One problem appears to have been that the home care staff did not dare to move the woman and therefore left her sitting on the couch.
– I can’t answer that. The registration arrived the day before yesterday. I haven’t gotten that far in the process, but it is clear that we take this very seriously and will look into it.
If the Malmö city investigation concludes that the home care service has caused or risked causing a serious misconduct, the municipality is obliged to submit a Lex Sarah report to the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo).
