The attack took place outside the capital Tehran, state media reported.
According to state media, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was subjected to a car bomb and then shot by what has been described as “armed terrorists”. He later died in a hospital, due to his injuries.
Israel believes that the nuclear physicist, among others, has played a prominent role in Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program and has been described by diplomats as “the father of the Iranian bomb.”

Hossein Salami, head of the paramilitary guard, according to the AP, tweeted:
““Killing nuclear scientists is the most violent confrontation that can be done to prevent us from reaching modern science.”.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, according to the Washington Post, but Iran has previously accused Israel and the United States of carrying out similar attacks on nuclear experts in the country in the past.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote a statement on Twitter on Friday, saying it was a “terrorist act against the state” with “serious indications of Israeli interference.”
