Shaking message: “Hydropower is not sustainable”
In the spring, an EU decision can be made that changes the game plan for the energy industry. The European Commission no longer considers hydropower to be classified as sustainable.
The data came as big news on Friday morning, after the European Commission presented its proposal for a list of sustainable green investments. The list is known as a taxonomy and will form the basis of private capital for green investments.
According to Swedish Radio, European Commission officials now own the issue, and this spring they will make a decision on the list, where hydropower is not included as sustainable energy. The European Commission also does not believe that bioenergy, like forest raw materials, is sustainable.
River rescuers are positive
Someone who is very happy to accept the European Commission’s proposal is Älvräddarna’s Secretary General, Christer Borg, at least as regards the chapter on hydropower.
– It is good that the EU is now talking about hydropower and sustainability claims. Everyone who works with these issues knows that Swedish hydropower is anything but ecologically sustainable, often not socially either, Christer Borg tells Fiskejournalen.
It also adds:
– The fact that large-scale hydropower plants after the NAP trials have the epithet of modern environmental conditions does not change the fact that they will remain unsustainable. Sustainability is linked to reality, says Christer Borg.
