Rapper Yasin, formerly known as Yasin Byn and Yasin The Don, is one of Sweden’s biggest artists with multiple top spots on Spotify and multiple charts. At the same time, he is singled out by the police as a prominent member of Rinkeby Shottaz’s gang, which, in its rivalry with the so-called Death Patrol, is behind several murders and assassination attempts in Stockholm in recent years.
In October, Yasin’s latest album, “More to life”, was released. He came to divide his fans into two camps: those who liked it and those who wanted to recover their old sound.
In the SVT documentary “Yasin,” which premiered on Thursday, he wonders what it is they really want to take back.
– Old Yasin, he sat in four cells while you were at home and ate at his apartment in Östermalm. What do you want back with him?
Arrested on suspicion of murder
The music he created, first together with the collective “Byn Block Ent”. and “Ghetto Superstars” have fundamentally influenced Swedish hip hop. The lyrics are stark, dark, and often a description of the crime.
But his new release has been met with criticism from fans who say it sounds “signed.” Commercial.
In the documentary, he says that fans want him to continue without barriers and be “real”, they want to see him as a “loser.”
Rapper Yasin, named Yasin Abdullahi Mahamoud and 22 years old, was suspected of murder last winter. The night before New Year’s Eve a year ago, 20-year-old Vincent Mbinkeu was shot and killed in a car parked in Rinkeby. According to the police, Mbinkeu was in Shottaz, as was Yasin.
The theory of the police during the investigation was that the murder was an internal conflict. Yasin Abdullahi Mahamoud was arrested on suspicion of murder. But in March he was released, and then the investigation into the murder was closed in its entirety because prosecutors do not believe it is possible to take it further. Suspicions are now ruled out.
Yasin has previously been sentenced to more than two years in prison for a felony.
“Can we answer the next question?”
In the SVT documentary “Yasin”, music journalist Johannes Cakar asks if the rapper has left the criminal behind.
Yasin hesitates and hums, wondering if she can answer the next question.
– I don’t want to answer that question, it was because … in the whole interview now it’s black and white that I’ve left it behind … you understand?
He describes how he sat in his prison cell and watched his friends and colleagues receive awards at music galas. How the line to the song “It’s hidden in the snow” came to be:
– My body is here but I sleep among the stars. I am in this room, in this cell, but every time I dream, I am among the stars.
