– This is because those who live in special dwellings are the most vulnerable that we have in our population. They are the oldest and often have chronic diseases. They also live in a way that carries risk, says state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.
A total of 3,002 people living in nursing homes and 1,696 people with home care died in covid-19 according to statistics from the National Board of Health and Welfare for the period from March 1 to November 23.
– This is a phenomenon that we see in all countries that have a great spread, it is precisely in these groups where mortality becomes very high, says state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.
“We will see more deaths”
Statistics also show that deaths related to elderly care continued through the fall. Since October 1, 363 people in elderly care have died as a result of COVID-19.
– The levels are now much lower than last spring, but it is very difficult to assess how development will be in the future. We’ll see more deaths based on what the infection situation looks like in special homes, says Iréne Nilsson Carlsson, a public health adviser for the National Board of Health and Welfare.
Since the start of the pandemic, SVT has examined how the crown crisis struck elderly care. Among other things, we have been able to tell about lack of protective equipment, how the infection took hold Y the excess mortality of the country’s nursing homes.
Serious criticism of IVO
On Tuesday, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (IVO) presented the first part of its review of elderly care. The criticism was devastating.
– IVO has found that the minimum level is too low in all regions. Therefore, quality must be raised where there are deficiencies, says Iréne Nilsson Carlsson, a public health adviser for the National Board of Health and Welfare.
However, it is not visits to nursing homes that are the main cause of high death rates according to Anders Tegnell.
– Our impression is that visits represent a very small part of the introduction of the infection into households. Sometimes it is not possible to know, but almost always where it is possible to know, unfortunately it is the staff who have brought the infection, he says.
