Following the news of the death of the Argentine soccer legend, hundreds of Napoleon fans filled the streets of the Spanish Quarter of Naples, where many lit a candle and greeted a large mural depicting Diego Armando Maradona.

The San Paolo Stadium, the stadium of Naples, was lit up as a tribute to the club’s icon and the city’s mayor, Luigi De Magistris, suggested that the stadium should be renamed as a tribute to the “best soccer player of all the times”.

“Diego made our people dream, he saved Napoli with his genius,” he wrote on Twitter.

Italian Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora, born in the southern Italian city, also paid tribute to Maradona.

– During a season that cannot be repeated, he represented the dreams and hopes of the people of my city. Naples is crying tonight, he said.

Diego Maradona, who turned 60, played for Napoli between 1984 and 1991 and the club won both the league title and the cup title in 1987, then also the UEFA Cup in 1989 and Serie A again in 1990.

Before all the games of the weekend in Serie A, a minute of silence will be observed in tribute to Diego Maradona.
