The tougher general advice seems to have made Swedes travel less collectively. All metropolitan regions report fewer travelers, and in Stockholm congestion has dropped significantly.

The increasing spread of the infection has prompted the Swedish Public Health Agency to tighten general guidelines across the country. From a political point of view, there has been a strict tone towards the pandemic action of the population, and judging by the statistics of trips in public transport in the largest cities of the country, the municipalities and extensions have taken effect.

In Skåne, where city councils say “avoid traveling by public transport or other public transport”, 20 per cent fewer people traveled with Skånetrafiken buses during week 47 compared to week 43 before the new restrictions came into effect. vigor.

Train travel has also decreased during the period. 24 percent less in Pågatågen and 26 percent less with Öresundstågen, according to the statistics that TT has read.

Overall, bus and train travel in the region is about half of what it was the corresponding week in 2019.

“Obey the advice”

Västtrafik, who is responsible for public transport in Västra Götaland, also sees reduced trips. Having had between a 30% and 35% reduction in trips compared to the same period in 2019, the figure for last week is expressed in approximately a 45% reduction in trips in the region.

“It is difficult to say with certainty why, but a reasonable assumption is that people have obeyed the stricter advice and restrictions that went into effect during week 44,” writes Mette Ramquist, press manager of Västtrafik, in a email to TT. .

During week 46, trips were 43 percent lower than the corresponding week last year.

Less congestion

In the capital, there is a clear tendency to travel. Claes Keisu, press officer for the Stockholm Region Traffic Administration, says there has been a “clear reduction in trips” both by metro and commuter trains since the municipalities came into effect on 29 October.

– In normal cases, the busiest hours at rush hour, we see a greater decrease than in other hours, he says and refers to the statistics of commuter trains where on Monday of this week about 40 percent fewer passengers they passed the barriers during the morning rush hour.

Even on buses in Stockholm, there seem to be fewer trips recently. According to Keisu, reports of congestion on line 4, the line that reports the most congestion, have dropped from 350 a week a month ago to 215 weeks 46.

Still, Keisu raises a warning finger ahead of Black Friday, which sent travel skyrocketing last year.

– It will be interesting to see if we see the same trend this year.
