It was a technical failure that caused the Viking Line ship Amorella to ground in September, investigation by the Accident Investigation Board shows.

“As a result of a technical failure in Amorella’s power control system, the angles of the right propeller blades moved by themselves to the full reversal position as the boat approached the narrow passage at Hjulgrund,” he says. The report.

During the incident, the bridge crew discovered that the ship was not behaving as usual. The ship turned towards the edge of the street area, causing the first bottom feeling southeast of Hjulgrund. After the ship’s draft at the bow increased and leaned to the right, the captain on board decided to drive it to shore on the island of Järsö.

The investigation continues and the full report, including the investigation plan, will be published in the summer of 2021.

On Wednesday, it was also announced that Viking Grace, which ran aground at Mariehamn in Åland this weekend, can be returned to service. After investigation, it turned out that only one propeller was damaged in connection with the accident, Viking Line claims. Neither the hull of the ship nor the bottom was damaged. After being towed, the ship was able to bring its own engine to Turku and then to Naantali, where damage to the propeller is being repaired. No person was injured in the accident.

Viking Grace will resume traffic on Sunday, November 29, leaving Turku shortly before 9:00 p.m.
