Older people are undervalued, that’s why they were abused under the care of covid

The reduction of medical care in the country’s nursing homes relative to the crown is not surprising. One had already guessed.
However, it is equally sad that it reflects our attitude towards the elderly and the sick. They have a low value.
It is the Inspectorate of Health and Care Services, Ivo, that examined the greedy medical care of those who lived in the country’s nursing homes, special housing, this spring.
Those who have been examined are those who have covid or suspected of being covid. The survey was conducted during two periods, February and March and May and June. No change for the better could be noticed between the two periods.
The criticism is sharp, if not devastating.
– The minimum level is simply too low, says Sofia Wallström, director of Ivo.
D serious criticism is summarized in four points:
-
The elderly have not received care and treatment based on their individual needs.
-
Older people and their close relatives have not been involved in care.
-
Care at the end of life, that is, when it is known that death is inevitable, has not been carried out in accordance with current regulations.
-
Care decisions cannot be followed because information in primary care records is deficient.
But perhaps the worst is that a fifth, Twenty percent of those ill or suspected of coviditis in nursing homes did not receive an individual evaluation by a physician. They have based their decisions on others, or in some cases, even on third party data.
– Not acceptable, Sofia Wallström sums up the criticism.
Like I said, he’s not particularly surprised. Many of those who died, especially in the spring, were residents of special lodgings. Basic hygiene routines were found to be under all the criticism.
Since then, staff have received massive training in hand washing and other ABCs of hygiene.

The elderly are not a strong pressure group and are treated worse, writes Lena Mellin.
But the question is how it could be. It is not the case that everything got worse due to the pandemic. It has been bad for a long time, but the shortcomings were exposed. Ivo talks about system errors.
I think the main reason it is allowed to be so bad is that it is about old and infirm.
If you live in a special accommodation it is man not only old. He is also so ill, with dementia or another illness, that he cannot stay home. Not even with five to seven daily visits from the home help service.
They are not a strong pressure group. They have no organization to represent them. They are just way below the scale. They have a low value.
I dare say no doctor would They dare to give prescriptions based on the observations of an auxiliary nurse who informed a nurse who spoke with the doctor if the patient is a man of 42 years in his career.
But with older people it works. Or at least it’s gone.
Part of the explanation may also be that the municipalities are the owners of the special dwellings. While the regions, the old county councils, are in charge of medical care. Shared responsibility is not always good.
The 21 regions now have until January to present plans on how to remedy the serious deficiencies. Many of us hope to be successful in that work and in its implementation.
