The number of covid patients admitted to Stockholm rose to 748 on Tuesday.

But the rate of increase has more than halved in the last week alone, from 60 percent to 25 percent.

When the Stockholm Region released its latest report on the status of covid-19 on Tuesday, the number of hospitalized corona patients stood at 748. This means that another 150 have been admitted since last Tuesday.

But even as the number continues to rise, the pace has slowed down considerably in the last week.

On Tuesday, November 17, the increase was 60 percent (from 373 patients to 598).

On Tuesday, November 24, the increase halted at 25 percent (from 598 patients to 748).

Maria Rotzén Östlund, an infection control physician in the Stockholm region, has noticed the change, but is careful to extract some important changes from the development.

– It continues to increase although it has not been at such a high rate between the last two Tuesdays. All I know is that fewer people are being served in VAT now compared to this spring, he says.

She doesn’t know exactly what caused the declining increase, but she’s sure healthcare has learned a lot from last spring when the pandemic struck.

– What I hear about care is that you have learned to care for those who enter. We have learned to use oxygen early and drugs that don’t cause blood clots, he says.

She denies that the increase could be due to a different assessment of who is admitted to the hospital now compared to before.

– No other prioritization is done now compared to this spring, says Maria Rotzén Östlund.

The rate of increase in the number of hospitalized covid patients was even higher in early November.

As of Tuesday, November 10, the figure was 76 percent (from 212 patients to 373).

On Tuesday, November 3, the increase was 78 percent (from 119 patients to 212).

If you look at the number of confirmed infections in the Stockholm region over the same time period, you can see a clear slowdown in recent weeks.

November 17-24: 9,786 Autumn.

November 10-17: 9753 fall.

November 3 to 10: 8 123 autumn.

The event led the region’s chief physician to evacuate the “cautious optimism” in Monday’s “Aktuellt”:

– Then it would mean that in 10-14 days we should reach a peak, a plateau, when it comes to hospital care. And from there we hope we can crawl down pretty quickly. But then it is important that we persevere, avoid congestion, do not party and take care of ourselves as residents of the region, he said.

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said at Tuesday’s press conference that the spread of the infection “may begin to stop.”

– We must remember that we are still at a high level, it is very important that we do not take this as income so that we can start to return to a normal life again, he told Aftonbladet.

– But it’s probably a combination of many different things. We hope and believe it has a lot to do with the local general councils we have in place, which have had a very clear impact in a number of ways. There are significantly fewer people who are away from home, more people who work from home, fewer who are shopping, etc.

At most, in April, approximately 1,100 covid patients were treated in hospitals in the Stockholm region.
