Like so many other sports associations, IFK Gothenburg is drawn to a tense economy.
The corona pandemic poses major challenges with significant revenue losses for all clubs.
Thus, there was jubilation in Kamratgården after the news on Tuesday that Poya Asbaghi will now take over the Swedish U21 team, which GT was able to reveal during the morning.
– Congratulations, lots of fun for Poya! Wish you luck. I hope you are aware of our young Blue and White players, says Blåvitt point guard Max Markusson on the message.
“The union takes responsibility”
Poya Asbaghi had an annual salary of approximately 1.5 million SEK at IFK Gothenburg. Just over a year ago, Blåvitt extended his contract with his head coach. The new deal was extended through the 2022 season, but was prematurely terminated on September 3 when he was fired.
Now, SvFF will pay Poya Asbaghi instead of IFK Gothenburg.
What does this mean to you, Max Markusson?
– It means a lot. This means that the union takes responsibility for Poya. It is a relief for our economy, of course.
You just don’t have to pay his salary?
– Yes, exactly. Clearly it feels good considering our situation.
“We appreciate all the relief”
According to Max Markusson, Poya Asbaghi had a predetermined notice period in his contract, so he negotiated no that the club would pay his salary until the end of the contract (2022).
– Like a CEO agreement. But whatever happens, we appreciate all the relief.
When Poya Asbaghi was sacked by IFK Gothenburg, Roland Nilsson left his job as captain of the national team for the Under-21 team to take over for Blåvitt.
So now Asbaghi is going in the opposite direction.
IFK Gothenburg achieved an important point in the derby against BK Häcken on Monday and thus took a big step towards a new contract with the Allsvenskan.
– He’s four points from qualifying and that’s where our focus is. It’s sad that we ended up in this situation, that’s the general sentiment, but it will be a question for years to come. Now we will make sure to put in good performances against Östersund and Sirius and secure the contract on our own, says Max Markusson about the end of the season.
