Record number of confirmed covid-19 infections in western Sweden

For the seventh consecutive week, the number of COVID-19 infections increased in the Västra Götaland region.

Last week 4,588 new cases were reported, the highest number of confirmed infections in the region during the entire pandemic.

Infection control physician Thomas Wahlberg continues to appeal to the public to stop the spread of the infection.

– We have stricter advice at Västra Götaland and I cannot stress enough how important it is that we all unite behind them. Only together can we reverse the trend. Everyone has a responsibility and I want to tell everyone: your choices make a difference, it says in a press release.

236 people are treated in hospitals

Due to the increased spread of the infection, the burden on hospitals in the region has also increased.

As of Tuesday morning, the number of people who needed hospital care for the disease was 236, of whom 27 were treated in the intensive care unit.

– It is a pressure situation, but at the same time, we are now better equipped in many aspects. The healthcare sector has learned a lot about covid-19 compared to this spring. Care times are shorter and there is not as large a proportion of patients who need intensive care, says the director of health and medical care, Ann Söderström, in the press release.

The region conducts more PCR testing than before during the pandemic and testing capacity has doubled during the fall.

During week 46, just over 41,000 tests were analyzed and last week it is believed that there are more, around 43,000, between ten and eleven percent of them have been positive.

The region has signed an agreement with a global group of laboratories, which means that it will be possible to carry out another 20,000 coronary tests a week.
