The result comes from a combination of two vaccine methods. When one of the methods was used, meaning that patients receive a lower dose of vaccine to begin with, the efficacy was 90 percent. With the second method, the efficiency was 62 percent, the drug company writes.
Therefore, the combined efficiency was approx. 70 percent.
No serious side effects
The vaccine must have been tested in 20,000 patients. Neither of these should have shown severe symptoms of illness or needed hospital care after receiving the vaccine, according to Astra Zeneca.

An article in BBC describes the news as both a triumph and a disappointment, given the news that Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been shown to be more than 90 percent effective against the virus. But according to the BBC, the Astra Zeneca vaccine should be cheaper and easier to store.
Astra Zeneca estimates that it will have 700 million doses of vaccines ready globally during the first quarter of 2021 and 200 million doses already before the turn of the year, Reuters writes.
