They then spent the night at Ikea, until the guards arrived.
– It seems they stayed there voluntarily, says Kim Hild, a police spokesman.
During the night, the police received a case that they themselves describe as “special”.
Two 12-year-old girls are said to have stayed at the Ikea department store in Malmö after closing and at least tried to explore the department store during the late hours of the night.
– It seems they stayed there of their own free will and hid from the guards when they made their last round and then stayed in the department store overnight, says Kim Hild, a police spokesman in the southern region.
Exactly what the girls should have done in the department store overnight, the police don’t know, but their adventure came to an abrupt end.
– At three o’clock the night before, the department store guards discovered that the girls were there. They contacted us and we headed to the place, says Kim Hild.
The girls are reported for unlawful intrusion, but as they do not yet have criminal responsibility, this will be a matter for social services.
– The police patrol took the girls home after they were discovered and social services will take care of this case, says Kim Hild.
Ikea says they take events like this seriously.
“The safety of staff and customers is our highest priority. It is not allowed to stay in the department stores and it is something we take seriously. We have security routines to prevent this, among other things we have patrol guards who search the department stores before closing. All of our department stores in Sweden are also equipped with motion detectors, which in this case were also activated. ” the company writes in a statement.
