A man died after being attacked by a shark on Cable Beach in Broome, in northwestern Australia.

Police and rescue services were alerted shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday that the 55-year-old man had been attacked. He was picked up on the beach, but his life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead on the spot, reports ABC News.

The beach is popular with tourists, but since it is the off-season, there were no lifeguards on duty to guard the beach, according to Perth Now.

It is the eighth death caused by sharks this year in Australia, according to the Taronga Foundation, which maintains statistics on the number of shark attacks in the country.

Unlike other parts of Western Australia, shark attacks are rare in Broome. However, the beach is closed once or twice a year when life-threatening saltwater crocodiles move along the shoreline.
