Cross-country skier Max Novak surprised everyone when he surpassed the elite of the national team and took home victory in the premiere in Bruksvallarna on Friday.
But in an interview with Aftonbladet, he later admitted that he had invested money in another skier in the race, something that is prohibited. Skiers cannot play in the races they participate in.
“You shouldn’t do that at all in a race you are participating in. Both the Swedish Sports Confederation and we at the federation have clear statutes on this,” national team manager Anders Byström tells TT.
The competition jury has contacted the International Ski Federation, Fis, for guidance on the matter.
Ludvig Remb, member of the jury and assistant to the leader of the competition, says that he has not yet spoken with Max Novak himself, but is waiting for Fis’s response.
– We have never experienced this, it is the first time. Now we’ve checked what’s going on with Fis and we’ll get an answer from there, but I don’t know when, he says.
The length manager, Daniel Fåhraeus, writes in a text message that the response is expected to take a couple of days, precisely because something similar has never happened before.
Anders Byström also says that it is now important to await the decision of the competition jury regarding a possible sanction.
What do you think of this yourself?
– It is not allowed, so there is no doubt that you should not do that. But I don’t know if he didn’t know and thought it was okay, so it’s hard to say, says Anders Byström.
Despite the ongoing review, Novak decided to redo it all on Saturday and once again invested in his own career. The company with the victory, however, did not manage to repeat, but came out in the sprint heats.
– Today I played again and made the mistake of not winning, Novak tells Aftonbladet.
