Anti-racism demonstrations in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the day after a high-profile fatal blow.

The death of a black man in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre has sparked protests across the country and demands for action against racism.

The case is in many ways similar to the high-profile death of American George Floyd this summer.

Afro-Brazilian Joao Alberto Silveira Freitas was beaten to death Thursday by security guards in front of a grocery store belonging to the French chain Carrefour.

A video filmed by a witness shows how one of the store guards repeatedly hits Silveira Freitas on the head while another guard restrains him. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Video recording of the incident spread like wildfire in the Brazilian media and just hours after the incident, thousands of protesters gathered in various parts of the country. Among other things, harsh criticism was leveled at the food chain that employed the guards and shops were vandalized in several places.

Police fired tear gas and stun grenades into crowds in several locations, but the demonstrations have yet to show signs of abating.

The two security guards who appeared in the film have been arrested, one of the guards was at that time also employed by the country’s military police.
