The liquor stand does not prevent restaurants from closing at night at 10.30pm. A lagoon allows them to reopen after closing.
Several restaurants have announced reopening with lower prices for food and service of popular beers and non-alcoholic alternatives.
– Our employees will be left homeless if we don’t do this, says Alexander Dhazi, human resources manager at Monky Bar.
As of Friday, November 20, restaurants and bars will not be able to serve alcohol after 10 PM and restaurants must close before 10:30 PM.
But restaurants have found a loophole in the proposal memo:
“However, there is no provision in the Alcohol Act that prevents restaurants from reopening later and continuing to serve non-alcoholic alternatives.”
Monky Bar, Interpool Brasseriet and N3rds Bar in Stockholm are just a few of the many restaurants that have announced that they will close at 10pm according to the law and then reopen, but without serving alcohol.
“A. On Friday the 22nd and Saturday we started to vacate the premises and we closed quickly so that we could then reopen after 10:30 pm without serving alcohol,” Södermalmskrogen Monky Bar writes on his Instagram.

Monky Bar will reopen after 10pm
– As soon as we get an approval from the supervisory unit, we can reopen, without serving alcohol, of course. Apparently they have received many requests from restaurants that want to reopen, says Alexander Dhazi, human resources manager at Monky Bar.
He says it was not an obvious decision to reopen, but that they have no other option financially.
– We have 20 employees who will be homeless if we don’t do this. If the government had put together a support package in which they helped the restaurants with the fixed fees and the layoffs of all the staff, we would have closed the restaurant tomorrow.
Alexander Dhazi also says that the bar has a carefully secured crown and will follow all advice to the letter.
Permission unit: Fully legal
Aftonbladet has spoken with Carina Cutlip, head of the permitting unit in Stockholm, who says they know it is completely legal to reopen.
– The question of what time it can reopen again, the authorities are still investigating. But it will take some time to close before it can reopen.
This means that some of the restaurants that intend to open at the same time as they are closing may have to rethink.
– We have not yet decided how long restaurants should be closed, says Carina Cutlip.
How to check that restaurants do not serve alcohol after reopening?
– The provision is clear, it is a serious offense to break it. I think most restaurateurs will follow.
On Friday, the licensing authority has 16 inspectors who will leave at 10:30 pm and will ensure compliance with the regulations. Carian Cutlip says that if you see that restaurants, taverns or nightclubs are not following the restrictions, you can tip the licensing unit by emailing their function mailbox.
– The police will also be available to help verify.
Minister of the Interior: It is difficult to see that demand
At today’s press conference, Aftonbladet asks Interior Minister Mikael Damberg how the government sees restaurants wanting to reopen after 10pm.
– I haven’t seen that information. It’s hard for me to see that there is demand for this type of business late at night. Now is not the time to meet in social contexts to, above all, save lives, he responds.
