BRUKSVALLARNA. Chaos before it begins, shock after.
Cross-country skier Max Novak made a late ski change and crushed the elite of the national team at the premiere in Bruksvallarna.
– I stopped and said hello this morning, says about the concept of victory.
In harsh external conditions with wind and fresh night snow on the slopes, the national premiere of skiing was held in Bruksvallarna.
The men drove 15 km in classic style and the fastest was not any of the skiers of the national team but the 24-year-old cross-country skier Max Novak.
After the victory, he was almost shocked.
– I don’t understand anything, he tells SVT after the barking.
For Sportbladet, he explained the sentiment:
– I got to the first notice and I came out with 16 and I thought that things like that could happen that you open up strong and you explode. Then I got to the second lap and I led by 25 and I thought, yeah yeah that’s fine. The next lap I doubled over a bit, but I was leading by 32 and started to realize that I was fighting for the win, he tells Sportbladet.
When he realized that there were 12 kilometers to go, he “bombed.”
As a long distance racing specialist, he is used to gambling. The plan, however, was to ride classic skis.
– I stood up and wanted very much this morning and finally chose classic (with brackets). I thought it would be difficult on the slopes, he says.
A belated advice from his friend Eddie Edström, just eight minutes before departure, caused Max Novak to rethink.
– I ran to the wallaboden and they started to dust the skis. I changed, took off my jumpsuit and got ready. It was worth the stress, says Max Novak of Offerdals SK.
Several of the most renowned national team skiers were missing from the race. Viktor Thorn is abstaining from this weekend’s race due to back pain, Halfvarsson Street and Jens Burman will start later this weekend. The only skier in Team A training group was Oskar Svensson, who finished seventh.
Max Novak couldn’t even invest money.
– I couldn’t play with myself. It’s a pass for the bookmakers, says Novak, who has invested his money in second place in the race.
Max Novak, who was successful last winter in long distance races, put in a really good effort when he staggered down the track at Bruksvallarna without mooring.
The increasing snowfall made the challenge difficult, but he stayed away from William Poromaa, who had a good race with a strong finish and seven seconds behind in the finish.
William Poromaa, 19, is a great hope for the future and managed his career well.
– The feeling was not a hundred today, I really have a pig out there, he says.
Get hit by a cross country skier, what does that say?
– He says that fencing goes faster … When they removed the zones (without stakes) I thought, but when you go to the World Cup, there are the zones, says Poromaa.
Novak has previously been part of the Swedish youth national team and has continued to invest heavily in traditional skiing ever since, without making the breakthrough he hoped for. Among other things, he has the help of the Halfvarsson Street coach, Mattias Reck.
– It’s funny, if there’s anyone outside the team I’m on, it’s Max, says Calle Halfvarsson.
Gustav Eriksson was third.
