Crown crisis: Skansen closes for the first time in 129 years

Skansen was opened on October 11, 1891. Since then, the open air museum with zoo at Djurgården in Stockholm has kept the entrances open and has been able to do so even during the corona pandemic when Skansen, being an open-air stadium, had the opportunity to be open according to current restrictions. But the further spread of the infection and new restrictions now mean that Skansen will have to shut down. Starting next Friday and until further notice, the gates will be closed and “Christmas at Skansen” will also be canceled, the park writes in a press release.

The reason is Stefan Löfven’s clear message to “cancel” earlier this week.

Skansen sees no one Another option that is not to close completely, “assume responsibility according to the new guidelines where all people are encouraged to take responsibility and not comply with more than 8 people and within the family.”

– Making the decision to close Skansen now feels difficult but correct. We are in an extremely dire financial situation in which we fight for our survival. Previously, we made the assessment that we can be open because we are an open-air museum, while we have limited the number of visitors and adapted our business to be safe for our guests. But when we now see development going in the wrong direction, and in combination with the clear message from the government this week, we believe we should shut down to further contribute to less spread of infection and a safe society for all, says John Brattmyhr , CEO of Skansen in the press release.

Skansen has been struggling financially since the outbreak of the pandemic. When DN visited the open-air museum in March, it was almost completely deserted.

The fort is closed and with Friday, November 27. It is not clear how to solve the deep economic crisis caused by the pandemic, when now the income from the tickets also disappears. Being able to stay open until now, coupled with the support Skansen has received, has been crucial to survival over the last year.

– We must survive here and now, but at the same time we must be more innovative than ever to develop our offer to guests and generate new income. The challenge of reorganizing the business at the same time that employees are being laid off and that there are no basic financial conditions for development is extremely difficult to solve, says John Brattmyhr.

Earlier this week, Gröna Lund CEO Magnus Widell told DN that the amusement park is at risk of bankruptcy if they are not allowed to open in 2021. Gröna Lund was opened in 1883. The amusement park has currently had no income since 2019.
