Up to 1,500 people in Stockholm have received incorrect responses to their PCR tests.

Tests have shown that people are healthy, when they have probably been infected with covid-19.

– It is serious, but proof that our quality controls work, says Elda Sparrelid, chief physician in the Stockholm region.

Errors in the sampling materials have caused more than a thousand people to receive incorrect answers when they were tested for an ongoing corona infection. That message was delivered by the Stockholm Region in a press release on Thursday evening.

This applies to people who have been tested at nine access points in Stockholm County in the past three weeks.

– We know approximately how many have been sampled and how many have received a positive response. Then we have seen that there should be more people who received a positive response. And then we hit about a thousand people, says Elda Sparrelid, chief physician in Stockholm.

Samples in healthcare are affected

Even between 300 and 500 tests carried out in the health field have shown incorrect answers.

Incorrect sample material has caused people with low virus levels to receive negative test results when they should have been positive. The bug was discovered during one of the quality checks that are performed regularly, says Sparrelid.

– As many of you know, this is a very extensive sample. Then we have had to hire suppliers that we do not usually use. This error has been found in a transmission that has caused a reduction in sensitivity in the analyzes, he says.

Unknown who got the wrong answer

According to Elda Sparrelid, it is not possible to subsequently track who received the wrong test result.

How should it behave if it has been tested in one of these stations?

– Those who have already received a negative response should do what they always do, regardless of whether they have received a positive or negative response. You should stay home until you have no symptoms. If you want to be sure afterwards, you should wait a few weeks and get an antibody test.

Those who have been tested recently and have not yet received a response will receive the “technically incorrect” response.

The incident was reported

All incorrect sampling material has now been stopped and collected.

The incident has been reported to the Medical Products Agency. The Swedish Public Health Agency has also been informed to ensure that the sampling material is not used in other parts of the country.
