UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to present the largest investment in the country’s defense since the end of the Cold War on Thursday.

The investment represents a supplement of 16,500 million pounds, corresponding to 186,000 million crowns, over the next four years. The new money will consolidate Britain’s role as the top spending country in defense in Europe and the second most in NATO, according to 10 Downing Street.

The timing of the announcement may seem somewhat odd, as the UK economy contracted dramatically in 2020 as a result of the corona pandemic and state aid to affected businesses and individuals.

“I have made this decision despite the pandemic, because national defense must come first,” Johnson said in a statement before his speech in parliament.
