A person is being detained in Uppsala on suspicion of unprovoked assaulting and stabbing a randomly selected man in the back.
Police are now investigating links to a similar act in Sala last week.
At 01:00 on Wednesday night, a man in his 20s, apparently without provocation, was assaulted and received two stab wounds in the back by an assailant unknown to him. The assault took place in connection with both men getting off the Sala bus at Ekonomikum in Uppsala.
– It seems as if the aggressor selected someone at random. Surprisingly, he (the victim) is completely shocked by this perpetrator, says Jonas Eronen, press spokesman for the Uppsala police, continuing:
– Being stabbed in this way in the back is associated with danger to life. It is one of the worst crimes we have had in recent times.
The man was taken to the hospital by ambulance and, according to Eronen, things have gone relatively well and the injuries should not be life-threatening.
Similar crimes in court
After intense work, on Wednesday afternoon the police managed to arrest and then arrest a young man suspected of being behind the assault. The man is currently a suspect in attempted murder after the incident in Uppsala, but police are also investigating another attempted murder.
The man who was stabbed had boarded the bus in Morgongåva, between Sala and Uppsala. But the police suspect that the perpetrator traveled on the same bus already in Sala. There, a 45-year-old man was similarly assaulted last week by an unknown perpetrator armed with a knife.
– There are similarities in these two crimes, they are relatively close in time, and another common denominator is the Salabussen. So see if he could have done that in Sala too, says Jonas Eronen.
Police are looking for passengers
Over the past 24 hours, the police have been conducting a technical investigation of the bus and the area around the stop, and have secured some outdoor finds that should be submitted for analysis. Police still want to keep what the findings are a secret.
– Investigators have worked intensively with this since it happened, it has been important for the police to find a perpetrator because the crime is very serious, says Eronen.
At the same time, the police want to contact the 10-15 passengers who took the same bus as the two men involved, the 848 bus that left Sala at 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday night and arrived in Uppsala just over a hour later.
– You may have sat there and think that “what I have seen is not important”, but it can be a crucial piece when you put the puzzle in the investigation, says Jonas Eronen.
