It has been a turbulent time for the Norwegian men’s soccer team in recent days.
Swedish national team captain Lars Lagerbäck and his team were prevented by Norwegian health authorities from flying to Bucharest this weekend, where an away game against Romania awaited them in the Nations League.
This is because right-back Omar Elabdellaouis had tested positive for covid-19, so the entire national team was forced to sit in quarantine.
Norway, who led their group in division B, were forced to cancel their participation and consequently lost the match 0-3 following a decision by the European Football Association Uefa.
Yet so it was the next away game against Austria, thanks to Norway quickly mobilizing a so-called “emergency national team” that flew to Vienna.
And with, among others, Djurgården goalkeeper Per-Kristian Bråtveit and star midfielder Fredrik Ulvestad, the Norwegian team long sought to succeed with what no one thought was possible in the Austrian capital where profiles like David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic started on the local computer.
Ghaya’s Zahid gave the visitors a 1 – 0 lead after 61 minutes with a superb strike from the right. Played by Veton Berisha, the right-back pushed the ball into the net from very close and in the final minutes of the match everything indicated that Norway would maintain their lead in the match.
But with a little more With a minute into extra time, Bråtveit was forced to capitulate as substitute Adrian Grbic advanced from the right outside the penalty area and delivered a fierce low shot near the far post.
The match thus ended 1-1, which means that Austria wins the group three points ahead of Norway.
There was also no promotion to Division A for Finland, who had a chance for a group win until the final round, but then a distance triple was required against Wales.
Unfortunately for the Blue and Whites, the British rivals had woken up on the right side and won 3-1 at home in Cardiff.
