– It is a very limited area in which these farms are located, he tells TT and refers to the experiences of other countries, such as Denmark and the Netherlands, where the infection has also spread from farm to farm.
All mink farmers are encouraged to submit mink that have died on their own to the Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA), which tests them for coronavirus.
On October 23, the first crown drop was found in Swedish mink. On November 5, the infection was found to have spread to nine other farms and, at the end of last week, it turned out that three more farms had been affected, all in Blekinge. Thus, the infection spreads to 13 of the approximately 20 mink farms in the municipality of Sölvesborg.
Only in Blekinge
In the rest of Sweden, there are another 20 mink farmers, but so far only infected minks have been found in Blekinge.
So far, it is unclear how the infection spread to minks.
– We know that proximity to an infected farm is a risk factor. It is probably not one contagion, but many different ones. In some cases, they are probably people, says Karl Ståhl.
Breeding animals are saved
Other possible carriers for mink farms can be minks, cats, and perhaps runaway birds.
Until now, the type of mutated virus that has caused concern and led to mass slaughter in Denmark has not been found among Swedish minks. Therefore, the Swedish Board of Agriculture and SVA believe that breeding animals can be saved during the so-called ongoing fur, as most minks are killed so that the fur can be used and exported.
