SMHI warns of strong winds and storm surge in western Sweden

November has been very mild so far, one day standing out as the warmest November day in Gothenburg in over 100 years, with temperatures higher than you are used to.

– For Gothenburg and the west coast, temperatures have been 3 to 4 degrees above normal, says Maria Augutis, a meteorologist at the Storm Meteorological Institute.

But now it’s over.

According to the warning recently issued by SMHI, a southwest wind with very strong gusts, 21-24 meters per second, is expected in the Gothenburg, Bohuslän and Dalsland area overnight through Thursday. Along the coast, there may also be local storm surges of 25 meters per second. Also, some precipitation is expected.

Strong wind and wet snow

– The air is getting colder at the entrance. Tonight and tomorrow morning deep low pressure is moving across the country and bringing a lot of snow north. But even in northern parts of Bohuslän and Dalsland there may be elements of snow or wet snow tomorrow afternoon, says Maria Augutis and continues:

– The wind will increase significantly in the afternoon and afternoon and evening until tomorrow. Storm surges are possible along parts of the Bohus coastline. Further south there will be very strong gusts of wind.

She urges the public to be careful on the roads.

– Snow elements in combination with the wind if you drive a car can make a difference. If you haven’t switched to winter tires, you should, says Maria Augutis.

Sunny friday

But the storm won’t stop as long as the forecast is in place now. Better weather is already expected this weekend.

– Friday seems to be a really nice sunny day. The temperature will be a few degrees higher, up to five degrees. So put on your jacket and get out in the sun and enjoy.

– On Saturday a rain zone enters, but stabilizes on Sunday. It will be significantly cooler than in the last week, concludes Maria Augutis.
