After the verdict was announced in the Jönköping District Court on October 28, new information was received about the case, writes the prosecutor’s office.
Therefore, the preliminary investigation was resumed and Attorney General Maria Sterup appealed the district court ruling.
– We will now process the material and conduct more interrogations. Therefore, I request a postponement until January 15, but I hope that the investigation will be completed before that date. As soon as possible, I will present evidence to the Jönköping District Court, says lead prosecutor Maria Sterup in a press release.
New evidence: the original audio files
Expressen was already able to reveal last week that police and prosecutors received new evidence in the case, consisting of the original audio files of phone conversations between former SD European MP Kristina Winberg and a fellow party member.
In the audio files, the party partner testified that Peter Lundgren, in a hotel room in Nacka during the SD election conference in March 2018, took her on the chest against her will, which Expressen revealed during the election campaign from the EU last year.
In the conversations, the woman described to Winberg, who was also in the hotel room, how she reacted to the unwanted approach:
– Yes, he squeezed me a lot with his legs. I panicked like this … I panicked.
She also said:
– It was lucky that there were people in the room. What if I had been with him myself?
The revelation in the EU election campaign had a great impact. Peter Lundgren, who topped SD’s EU election list, canceled several major appearances in the last week before Election Day. The party also chose to remove Winberg from the polls, who was in fourth place on the list.
The Expressen disclosure also prompted the prosecutor to launch a preliminary investigation, and in November last year Peter Lundgren was charged with sexual harassment.
Distorted female voice
When the case took place in the Jönköping District Court in October, parts of Expressen’s television show were used as evidence against Lundgren. At the show, Expressen distorted the woman’s voice to protect her identity. Peter Lundgren commented on this when he was heard in the district court:
– I have no idea who is talking in this audio file. It really can be anyone.
FISCAL: Do you think it is NN (woman’s name, editor’s note) who is talking about the audio file?
– No, said Lundgren.
The woman, who did not want to participate in the investigation against Lundgren, also did not want to be heard in the district court because of her distorted voice on the television segment.
The acquittal also focused on the fact that the prosecutor did not have access to the original audio files, but only to parts where the woman’s voice was distorted. The verdict states that it is “It is entirely possible to assume that the person heard on the Expressen recording.” She is the companion of the party, but at the same time “It is not possible to make a definitive identification of who owns the voice”.
In addition, the judgment indicates that “The recorded conversation has been edited, it is not clear who or with what conditions or considerations”.
But now the prosecutor has taken note of the original audio files where the woman’s voice is not distorted.
New evidence against Peter Lundgren of SD
The police have gained access to the original files – hear from Expressen’s David Baas about the development of the case.
