Henrik Lundqvist will return to the New York Rangers.
The two parties have already agreed on a future together.
– I’ll be part of the Rangers for the rest of my life. Both I and they have had it clear. So it will be, the 38-year-old goalkeeper tells Göteborgs-Posten.
It was on October 9 of this year that it became official that Henrik Lundqvist continues his ice hockey career at rival New York Rangers club, Washington Capitals.
After 15 seasons at Broadway’s Madison Square Garden, he was bought out of his contract on September 30 for 26 million SEK.
I have never closed the door on Frölunda, and never will until the day I leave.
Now it is clear that he will return to the New York Rangers to fill a leadership position when his career as a goalkeeper ends.
– Yes, it will be the role they want it to be. So I don’t know if the role will be small or if there will be something else. It is further ahead. It is time again. It is not here and now, but I feel that somehow I will be “connected” with Rangers forever after so many years and with all the people I met at the club, from the owner down, says Henrik Lundqvist to GP.
Not closed to Frölunda
This summer, there were also thoughts of returning to Frölunda and reuniting with twin brother Joel Lundqvist.
– Yes. All the letters were there. All the different scenarios were involved when I started thinking about the whole situation. Somewhere in the big picture it was there. Much is about synchronizing life, what happens and what opportunities open up. I have never closed the door on Frölunda, and never will until the day I leave. It will always be in the big picture. Now was not the right situation, says Henrik Lundqvist to GP.

It is not yet clear when, where and how the next NHL season will be played. Although it is a preliminary start date set at January 1.
Henrik Lundqvist and his family still live in the Tribeca apartment in southern Manhattan. The Washington Capitals just opened their training facility and he has a training track in New Jersey.
“Shattered in the end”
In America, he has followed the recent riots closely, it has been complicated for various reasons, and he hopes that people can find a little more faith in the future and harmony. The people of New York were worried about what would happen if Donald Trump won the election.
– It was Joe Biden now – and it was a very good energy in town last Saturday when it was ready. People sang and were happy. It’s just what you want. May the United States be a little more “united” again. That is what the country has been good at in the past. Be together and be strong for the nation. It was very divided at the end, Henrik Lundqvist tells GP.
Henrik Lundqvist has posted his new goalkeeping gear on Instagram where, among other things, the helmet has stars, a bald eagle, the Washington Capital club insignia, and the Capitolium.
The family is going to the US capital next week to continue looking for housing.
On the west coast, they still have a big apartment in central Gothenburg and a house by the sea in Onsala, outside Kungsbacka.
