If the spread of the infection increases after the Christmas holidays, schools are at risk of closing, as announced by Education Minister Anna Ekström (S) in an interview with Expressen.

– Our schools are not built for a pandemic, he tells the newspaper and explains how the behavior of young people can be decisive in this regard.

– The more high school students can do their best to follow the rules, the greater the chances that we can keep schools open, he tells the newspaper.

Rules must be hardened with new force

After slowing down over the summer, the spread of the infection accelerated again during the fall, and the Swedish Public Health Agency warned that the virus is spreading rapidly among young people. Anna Ekström emphasizes how important it is for young people to remember that the pandemic doesn’t take time off just because they do.

The rules that apply will apply regardless of the vacation we’re on, he tells Expressen.

She goes on to explain how adults also have the opportunity to act responsibly, engaging in a dialogue with their children about the risks of the virus and also setting a good example.

I won’t hesitate

It was in the spring, when the spread of the infection gained momentum, that the government recommended closing high schools and universities. As it stands now, there is no exact limit to when a similar recommendation would come.

– If necessary, we will not hesitate to close schools, says Anna Ekström to Expressen.
