Danish radio has spoken to various sources with information about an ongoing wiretapping scandal within the Armed Forces Intelligence Service (FE), the Danish equivalent of the Armed Forces radio station, FRA.
According to information from the radio channel, the US intelligence service NSA has carried out espionage against several targets from a base in the Danish Amager. Among the targets were Danish advocacy group Terma and Saab.
Several of the sources point to the Swedish Gripen program as one of the targets of the espionage, according to DR.
Spied during combat acquisition
The NSA espionage is said to have occurred in connection with the Danish state’s acquisition of new fighter jets, where Saab’s Gripen jet was involved in the negotiations.
However, the deal ended with the country’s purchase of 27 US F-35 fighter jets, DR reports.
– The NSA has used cable cooperation for espionage directed against Denmark’s closest allies and previously also against Danish interests and targets, says a source from Danmarks Radio.
However, the radio channel cannot confirm whether the espionage was related to the acquisition or whether secret information about the store was leaked.
Used fiber cables
During the period from 2012 to 2014, the NSA established its data center at Amager.
The intelligence service must have used international fiber cables to conduct the interception, according to information from DR. Cables in Denmark also go to Sweden, the United States, England and Germany.
The NSA also used the XKeyscore program, which allows you to examine large amounts of data on fiber cables using keywords. As early as 2013, whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA uses the system.
