Umeå took the much-needed 1-0 victory against Eskilstuna.

Unfortunately, they did not receive help from elsewhere, which they so desperately needed as well.

The newcomer from the north joins Uppsala again in the elite next season.

Conditions were crystal clear from the start.

Regardless of what Djurgården and Piteå had in mind in their last matches, Umeå IK was a team that won on Sunday in Tunavallen to save their damallsvenska contract.

They would have a dream start on that hunt.

When the clock did not even reach five minutes, Umeå landed a free kick just outside the penalty area.

It is possible to argue whether the Eskilstuna wall should have been denser or not.

However, midfielder Eva Nyström’s free-kick was delicious.

The low free kick drilled in a corner and the 0-1 on the board was a fact.

Fragile handling

Umeå’s first management would be put to the test during the remaining match, especially at the end of the first half.

Fanny Andersson hit the top of the crossbar with a lob attempt with just half an hour to play.

Felicia Rogic’s shot a few minutes later ended in the same place.

And a couple of minutes later, a shot from Sonia Okobi was stopped at the goal line as total chaos erupted in Umeå’s penalty area after a corner kick.

The draw for Eskilstuna simply did not want to go in and Umeå clinched the much-needed victory, giving results figures copied from the last match between the teams.

Goes out on goal difference

But it still wasn’t enough.

Djurgården did his part and defeated the already relegated jumbo Uppsala. Piteå also did what they were asked to do against Kif Örebro. And Umeå’s goal difference against Eskilstuna, which ended the final round at the same points as Umeå, was already beyond rescue before Sunday’s game.

Hence, the relegation for Umeå after all, which means that both newcomers’ damallsvenskan stays were only one year.
