The TPLF separatist movement in Ethiopia’s Tigray region is launching a rocket attack on the airport in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea.

The reports of bombings against the Asmara airport arrived already on Saturday, after diplomatic sources. Given that the flow of information from Tigray is stifled and Eritrea is also a very closed country, the data was initially difficult to confirm.

Now, the Tigray regional government, the Tigre Liberation Front (TPLF), is taking up the attack, which can be seen as an escalation in the conflict that has long ravaged northern Ethiopia and escalated dramatically in early November, when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ordered an army action against the separatists. Report to various international news agencies.

“Legitimate target”

TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael accuses Eritrea, until recently an archenemy of Ethiopia, of allowing Ethiopian government forces to use the capital’s airport. That makes him a legitimate target, he says in an interview with AFP.

Neither the Government of Ethiopia nor Eritrea have commented on the TPLF data.

Both the UN and the African Union (AU) have warned that the conflict in Tigray could spread to neighboring regions. Hundreds of people have so far been killed in the fighting, which began when Peace Prize winner Abiy Ahmed sent troops to fight regional forces in Tigray, following accusations that they later attacked federal forces.

Information on massacres

Reports of massacres have also prompted the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to express her concern over the commission of war crimes.

About 20,000 people have fled the violence and are now in neighboring Sudan, whose refugee camps are already overcrowded, according to Sudanese authorities.
