I DRE. Difficult start.
But Stina Nilsson took revenge on the second shooter and finished 11th in her competitive debut as a biathlete.
– Impressive, says shooting coach Jean-Marc Chabloz.
Interest in the Swedish premiere of biathlon has never been greater. A record number of journalists are present at the Idre Fjäll and SVT broadcasts for the first time. All to follow Stina Nilsson’s competitive debut.
– It has felt like it has many eyes on me, but it has not bothered me. I’m so happy that I can filter. I’m here because I want to. I just want to go out and do what I have trained, and I am very happy that I managed to stay focused on that, says Stina Nilsson to Sportbladet after the debut in the competition.
And once on the slopes, the former long-distance star, as expected, succeeded. But at the shooting range it was more shaky. At least to start.
In the first horizontal shooter, there were two booms in a series of shots that lasted almost 40 seconds.
– A doubtful series. You probably ran out of breath and had to take over before the last shot. She waits a little too long and in the end it almost goes black for her, then you have to breathe again, says SVT expert Björn Ferry, who took the same series of shots in his debut as a biathlete.
“Awesome”
But in the second, shooter stopped, Nilsson retaliated and made four of five shots.
– Impressive, says shooting coach Jean-Marc Chabloz at the shooting range immediately afterwards.
– In the end it will be Olympic gold, says expert Björn Ferry with a twinkle in his eye afterwards.
“Clearly approved”
The coach of the national team, Johannes Lukas, could not be present in Idre. He is in quarantine at his home in Munich, Germany, and was therefore forced to watch the drama on television.
And he’s also impressed.
– A clearly approved and enjoyable effort to have completed the debut. I think he behaved very well despite the problems on the embankment. Strong to hold it together in standing shots!
Does this bode well for the future?
– Yes absolutely. But it is special for Stina. There is a lot of attention to her and people almost forget that she is new to the sport. It will be a process and should take the necessary time, says Lukas.
Stina Nilsson’s effort was enough for an eleventh place.
Hanna Öberg won with superior style, 17.7 seconds ahead of Johanna Skottheim. Markéta Davidová (Czech Republic) came in third place.
