C: Le Moine’s own goal over the woods

Rebecka Le Moine (MP) writes in Svenska Dagbladet that we must stop deforestation because it releases carbon dioxide and that the forest that is allowed to remain is better at countering climate change. Your message may sound good for a spokesperson run, but the nuanced picture of Swedish forestry is regrettable.

The Swedish forest is fantastic in many ways and Swedes have long been a nature loving people. We enjoy walks through the woods and we love picking mushrooms and blueberries. At the same time, it is part of the Swedish export miracle. Of the surface of Sweden, up to two thirds are forests. It is a huge resource that generates jobs and growth for the entire country. But it also plays a role in our transition to a fossil-free society. According to a report by the Royal Swedish Academy of Construction Sciences and Industries, the total climate impact of construction processes in Sweden amounts to approximately 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, more than all trucks generate and buses. If we can build more of wood, we can dramatically reduce climate impact.
