– This is the biggest car to hit Sweden in several decades, says Erik Stempels, a researcher at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, to SVT News.
Last Saturday, the night sky over all of Västmanland and parts of Uppsala County suddenly lit up with a bright light at 10:30 p.m. Three meteorite cameras in Norway showed that it was an extra bright meteor, a bolide, which entered Earth’s atmosphere and began to burn.
According to astronomers Initial estimates, the car should have weighed about 800 kilos. But now data has been collected from more chambers, indicating that the stone was significantly larger. Researchers from the American NASA announce that it could have weighed 9,700 kilos. European researchers are more modest and estimate about 5,500 kilos. The calculations are still in progress.
The stone exploded about 18 kilometers above the ground, between Västerås and Uppsala. In all probability, it is possible to find splinters on the ground.
– There are people who come here to watch, even from Germany. And then we still haven’t found anything. I know people in Norway want to come, but don’t because of the quarantine rules, says Eric Stempels.
The Örebro Astronomi association reports on its Facebook page that the pieces that are on the ground, or require tools to be produced, belong to the owner of the land. Those who find objects similar to meteorites are asked to first send them to the Swedish Museum of Natural History for analysis. Then they can be recovered.
