Several of the residents, including Roman Bondarenko, stayed outside and watched what was happening in their yard. Suddenly, the masked men attacked Bodarenko and beat him to the ground. Several witnesses relate how the 31-year-old was put into one of the trucks and taken away.
A few hours later, he was abandoned at a hospital in Minsk. He was then unconscious and suffered such severe brain damage that doctors immediately operated on him, but to no avail. On Thursday Bodarenko died of his injuries.
The actions of the regime are increasingly brutal
The masked men wore civilian clothes and therefore there is no evidence of who they were. But the incident is in line with the increasingly brutal actions that have symbolized the elite soldiers of the Interior Ministry in recent weeks.
The Belarusian regime has become increasingly violent in its attempts to quell the protests. In late October, testimonies emerged about how the police used shock grenades against demonstration trains in the capital and chased the protesters up the stairs where they were hit.
As recently as last week, at least 800 people took part in nationwide demonstrations across Belarus.
The law is expected to revive the protests in Belarus. Thousands of people have already gathered on the streets of Minsk for a memorial service, and the leader of the opposition, Svetlana Tichanovskaya, delivered a speech addressing Bondarenko’s family.
– Your son became an innocent victim of a horrible system. But for us, he will always be the hero of our country, he says.
