Donald Trump should admit defeat in the US presidential election, a group of experienced former world leaders announce in a joint statement. They believe that American democracy is at stake.

The group speaking is “The Elders” – the Elders – a group formed by former South African leader Nelson Mandela to accumulate experience among leaders who have been involved in the most important contexts. The group is led today by Mary Robinson, Ireland’s first female president, assisted by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Graça Machel, Mozambique’s first education minister, married to Mandela.

The president’s actions and seemingly unfounded allegations of voter fraud run the risk of damaging America’s democratic state, they believe.

“Those who are benefiting from the current stalemate are autocratic leaders and malicious actors who want to undermine democracy and the rule of law around the world,” the group wrote.

Other members are former Prime Minister of Norway Gro Harlem Brundtland, former President of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos.

Former US President Jimmy Carter, South African Bishop Desmond Tutu, and former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari are members emeritus.
