Demand for regular seasonal flu vaccines has been unusually high this year. Despite the fact that the Västra Götaland region, together with the cooperation organization, municipalities and regions of Sweden have made additional purchases of vaccines, now the supplier is out of stock.

– Many more people who are at higher risk of getting seriously ill with the flu – for example, people over 65 and those with certain chronic diseases like heart or lung disease – want to get vaccinated this year, says Gunilla Ockborn, assistant monitoring physician of infections, in a press release.

Interest in that Vaccination against seasonal influenza has also been high among healthcare professionals. The doses that the VG region still has at its disposal will be rationed so that they can be used by people who belong to a risk group.

– Due to limited availability, Smittskydd Västra Götaland has urged all vaccination units in the region to vaccinate only people over 65 years of age and people suffering from any of the conditions or diseases that pose a higher risk of severe flu Gunilla Ockborn says in the press release.

The region urges healthy people who do not belong to any risk group refrain from being vaccinated.

The risk group includes people with chronic heart or lung disease, diabetes, severely weakened immune systems as a result of illness or medication, and people with liver or kidney failure. People with other diseases or conditions that involve a limited ability to cough are also included in the risk group.
