– The overall situation in the labor market has stabilized this fall and unemployment is at 8.8 percent in October. But there are nearly 173,000 people who are long-term unemployed, who have been unemployed for more than twelve months, and that number has never been higher, says Arbetsförmedlingen’s head of analysis, Annika Sundén.
How At the beginning of the crown crisis, long-term unemployment continued to rise rapidly. Compared to a year ago, nearly 25,000 more have now been out of work for twelve months or more, and many others are at risk of ending up in the same situation. Some of them were affected even before the crisis of the crown.
– But there has also been a new group of people. It is those who have a secondary education and are usually quite close to the job market who have now also become long-term unemployed during this long crisis. There are many industries where it is not contracted at all, says chief analyst Annika Sundén.
Arbetsförmedlingen Statistics October shows that the number of unemployed has increased across the country compared to the same period last year. Now just over 455,000 are enrolled, an increase of just under 100,000 in one year. About 6,000 people were notified of the layoff during the month.
It is not known how the labor market will advance, but the main scenario is that unemployment continues to rise.
– It increases the spread of infection and therefore restrictions, which affects economic activity. At the same time, the government just announced that it is extending support to businesses that allow it to keep its workforce and then be prepared to start over when it changes, says Annika Sundén.
What is needed to access the growing long-term unemployment?
– Many of these jobs that have disappeared will not return. If you have become unemployed, and if you are at risk or are long-term unemployed, it is important that you think about what education you need to be able to take the available jobs when this crisis ends.
