Interior Minister Mart Helme and his son, Finance Minister Martin Helme, drew attention this weekend when they claimed that Joe Biden’s victory in the United States was due to electoral fraud.
The Finnish Yle has translated the comments that are heard on the Räägime asjast program, “We talked about it”, that the two politicians make together.
-I am always amazed at how openly the left lies and steals, it is a bottomless pit, Martin Helme said on the program.
Mart Helme completed:
“Somehow you have to cheat and forge, and then he came up with a fantastic opportunity: postal ballots,” he said.
The two politicians also speculated that the election result was an example of how the “deep state” works and predicted a civil war in the United States.
Both father and son Helme represents the nationalist Ekre party in the Estonian government. Relations with the United States are important to NATO country Estonia, and other Estonian politicians have quickly distanced themselves from the remarks.
President Kesti Kaljulaid called the comments, among other things, an “attack on the security of Estonia”.
During a press conference on Monday, Mart Helme announced his resignation. He referred, among other things, to “lies in the media” and assured that he did not say anything that had not already been said in the “free press in the United States.”
this is not the first time how Mart Helme makes headlines. In an interview with Deutsche Welle this fall, he said that Estonian homosexuals “should flee to Sweden.” When Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin formed a government last year, she called her a “cash girl,” referring to a job Marin had as a young woman.
Even then, both the Estonian president and the prime minister distanced themselves from Helme’s remarks.
According to the Estonian news site err.se, Martin Helme, who is chairman of the party in Ekre, will continue as finance minister. Mart Helme will move to Parliament and will therefore remain active as a politician. In Estonia, ministers are not members of parliament at the same time.
