Haparanda in the north will now also receive permanent camera surveillance.
Since the turn of the year, these cameras have been placed on the Öresund Bridge, in the port of Helsingborg and in Värtahamnen in Stockholm.
The cameras have ANPR technology that automatically reads the license plates and then compares them to the intelligence record of the Swedish Customs and in this way they can get results on cars that are interesting for the Swedish Customs to check.
Ingela Östmark, who is responsible for the surveillance camera project at Swedish Customs, says in a press release that Swedish Customs hopes to carry out further seizures of drugs, weapons and other contraband with the help of the cameras.
The goal is for more locations to be prepared for still cameras during the fall, the Swedish Customs further writes in the press release.
In the summer of 2018, Swedish Customs received extra money from the government to invest in technology, including permanent camera surveillance.
