It was at 10.30pm on Saturday night that the large space rock entered the atmosphere somewhere off the Åland Sea. Cameras in Finland, Sweden and Norway recorded how it passed into the atmosphere and reports on it came from Karlshamn, Eskilstuna, Örebro, Sala, Tärnsjö and a host of other places.
In various films of Surveillance cameras and car-mounted cameras show the luminous balloon moving across the dark night sky to illuminate the ground after a while as if it were a bright day. The bright meteor, a supposed fireball, made thousands of Swedes look up at the sky.
One of those who was below the point where the meteor entered was Marcus Dicksson in Tärnsjö in the northwest of Uppland:
– I was sitting inside with some others when the sky lit up like daytime. When I looked outside, I saw the trees as black silhouettes. Then came a prolonged rumble that was heard for 20 to 30 seconds and felt like it was vibrating, says Marcus Davidson, who called police and was told they were down.
Several other witnesses testify also how it felt like it was vibrating in the windows and on Facebook a witness tells how the sound sounded like a fighter plane.
Andreas Lindström had just gone to the farm in Tärnsjö with a friend:
– It suddenly became brighter and brighter and we looked at each other. He thought he was shining a flashlight on him. Then it became very bright, just like when our big construction headlights are turned on. Half a minute later it began to rumble and I felt the sound waves in my body, like very strong thunder. Then it was silent and then the roar returned, says Andreas Lindström.
Torgny Nilsson in Karbenning he also experienced the sound while sitting inside his house:
– I was sitting inside when I heard a very loud noise that was significantly louder than the one heard from the train passing near where I live, says Torgny Nilsson in Karbenning.
According to Eric Stempels, a researcher in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, the space rock passed over an area in western Uppland.
Our cameras show that it entered the atmosphere at 22:07 and that it moved at a steep angle almost directly from above.
How big could it have been?
– Judging by the brightness, I would appreciate it if it was as big as a soccer ball.
Eric Stempels says the meteor began to glow at an altitude of about 80 kilometers to break up at about 30 kilometers. It is difficult to say if the parts also fell to the ground because this depends on the material from which the original stone was made.
Tor E. Aslesen at The Norwegian Meteor Network says that if any part of the meteor had hit the ground, the vehicle must have been moving at a speed of less than 20 kilometers per second:
– We have not yet been able to obtain that information. But it was very bright and in our films it is so bright that cameras don’t have the strength to show it all. Boliden was seen as far away as Kristiansand, he says.
Kristiansand is located about 450 kilometers northwest of Uppland, where the meteor descended into the atmosphere.
